Harbour Lights Port Washington WI

To replace an aging wood tower, a metal art-deco tower, with the Keeper's quarters within was placed at the end of the north pier. The 58' tower was set upon an open arched concrete foundation. The tower, first lit in 1935 was built at a cost of $35,000. The lantern room housed a Fourth Order Fresnel Lens that flashed a red light, every 7.7 seconds. While no date could be researched, the lantern room was removed and replaced with an acrylic optic. There were only two maritime WPA projects approved in 1931, one was the Port Washington Pier and breakwater. Built at a cost of $625,000 the 2500' rock and concrete breakwater with its steel decking allows visitors to walk directly under the light.
